From Maya Bay's legendary shores to an unforgettable elephant sanctuary encounter, I discovered why Thailand's beaches and culture keep drawing me back.
Thailand has called to me twice now, and each time I've returned with more stories, more insights, and an even deeper appreciation for what this destination offers. On my most recent adventure, I spent three weeks in Phuket, determined to experience the islands that make this region famous around the world. I wanted to see it all firsthand so I could truly inspire my clients with authentic recommendations, not just guidebook suggestions.
I organized my days around speedboat tours to the surrounding islands, booking with local companies like Viator and Get Your Guide. Every single day, I visited between two and four islands by speedboat, and each one revealed something unique. The Phi Phi Islands lived up to their reputation as the most famous islands of Phuket. I explored Monkey Beach, wandered the shores of Bamboo Island, visited Koh Racha, and discovered the stunning Khai Islands. But nothing prepared me for Maya Bay.
The Beach That Took My Breath Away

Maya Bay is, quite simply, the most beautiful beach I've ever seen. This is where Leonardo DiCaprio filmed "The Beach," and standing there myself, I understood why filmmakers chose this exact spot. The water, the cliffs, the pristine sand. It's the kind of place that stays with you long after you've left. I keep telling people about it because words don't quite capture the experience of being there in person.
What surprised me most on this trip was the elephant sanctuary. I expected it to be interesting, but it became the true highlight of my three weeks. We got remarkably close to the elephants and watched them bathe themselves. There's something deeply moving about observing these gentle creatures in a sanctuary setting, and it's an experience I now recommend to everyone visiting Phuket.
Beyond the Beaches

Phuket isn't just about stunning coastlines, though those beaches are genuinely the most beautiful I've encountered anywhere in the world. The downtown area captivated me with its energy and offerings. The shopping there is amazing, and I discovered that everything is so affordable compared to what travelers might expect. I treated myself to massages that were simply the best I've experienced anywhere, and they cost a fraction of what you'd pay back home.
The food deserves its own paragraph. I ate the best Pad Thai of my life in Phuket, and I was so inspired that I took a Thai cooking lesson to learn how to make my own. Now I have that skill and those memories to carry home. For anyone who loves night markets, the Naka Market on Sundays is a must. It's one of the biggest markets in the world, and the atmosphere is electric.
One evening, I made my way to Patong Beach, the most famous beach in Phuket and the heart of the nightlife scene. This area definitely caters to a younger crowd. Lots happening, nobody goes to sleep at night, everyone parties in the Patong Beach area. It's not for everyone, but for those seeking that vibrant, energetic atmosphere, it delivers.

Who This Destination Is For
Because Thailand is such a huge and diverse country, I can honestly recommend it to anyone. Families with young kids will find plenty to do. Retired travelers seeking relaxing beach days and cultural experiences will love it. Young couples looking for adventure and nightlife have endless options. The destination truly caters to every type of traveler because there's so much variety between the different areas.
Now when clients ask me where to go in Asia, I know exactly what to tell them. I know which beaches to recommend, which speedboat companies to trust, and which experiences will match their specific needs and lifestyle. I understand the rhythm of island hopping, the magic of Maya Bay, and the joy of getting close to elephants in a sanctuary setting. Having been to Thailand twice now, I can speak from genuine experience rather than brochures. Indonesia is next on my list, but Phuket will always hold a special place in my heart, and I can't wait to help my clients discover it for themselves.
