Lesley Bogardis Kayaked to a Glacier in Alaska

A seven-day Norwegian Cruise Line voyage revealed why sailing through glaciers and watching fishermen deliver fresh salmon makes Alaska unlike anywhere else in the U.S.

I'd done my research. I'd joined Facebook groups, read reviews, and mapped out exactly what I wanted to do in each port. But nothing quite prepared me for what Alaska actually felt like when I arrived. Even though it's technically part of the United States, stepping off the Norwegian Bliss into those remote ports felt like entering an entirely different world.

I chose to cruise Alaska in May after discovering it's one of the best times to visit. The weather was great, the views were stunning, and I was ready to see what all the fuss was about. What I found over seven days exceeded every expectation I'd built up.

Kayaking to Ice and Flying Through the Forest

The moment I keep telling everyone about happened in Juneau. I climbed into a sea kayak and paddled toward the Mendenhall Glacier. As we got closer, the scale of it became almost impossible to process. We were right there, close enough to feel the cold radiating off the ice, surrounded by this ancient blue wall rising from the water. It was absolutely stunning in a way photographs simply cannot capture.

Then at Icy Strait Point, I decided to push myself and try the ZipRider. Ninety seconds at 60 kilometers per hour, flying above the forest. That kind of adventure stays with you. Each port, whether it was Sitka, Ketchikan, or anywhere else along the way, offered something unique to discover.

The Ship Took Us Inside the Glaciers

What truly surprised me was how close the Norwegian Bliss sailed into the glaciers themselves. I hadn't expected that at all. We weren't observing from a distance. We were right in the midst of them, sailing through channels of ice while grizzly bears and black bears roamed the shores. The wildlife was everywhere, constant reminders that this landscape belongs to something much larger than us.

And then there was the food. In these quaint little ports, fishermen would walk right into the restaurants carrying the day's catch. I ate fresh salmon every single day, prepared in every way imaginable. The abundance of fresh seafood was remarkable, and watching it arrive directly from the water to my plate made each meal feel like an event.

Why Cruising Alaska Makes Sense

Here's what I now understand that I couldn't have known before going: cruising is genuinely the best way to experience Alaska. You cover so many ports in a short amount of time. Staying in just one area wouldn't give you this kind of variety, this range of landscapes and experiences. One day you're kayaking to a glacier, the next you're zipping through the air, and every evening you return to the comfort of amazing food, entertainment, and service aboard the ship.

This trip is ideal for any age and any type of person who loves wildlife, hiking, and eating incredibly fresh seafood. If you appreciate quaint towns with real character, if seeing glaciers up close would move you, if the idea of watching bears from a ship deck sounds like the adventure you need, Alaska delivered all of that and more.

What I'll Do Differently for My Clients

The research I did before leaving, joining those Facebook groups, comparing cruise excursions to private companies, mapping out my interests for each port, that preparation made all the difference. Every morning when I arrived somewhere new, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I'll organize that same level of preparation for my clients now because I've lived it. I know which excursions are worth it, which timing works best, and how to match each port to someone's unique lifestyle and needs.

Alaska surprised me. It inspired me. And now I cannot wait to help others go on this adventure and live their own version of it. The stories waiting there are unlike anything else in the United States, and I've got the firsthand experience to prove it.
