From pink sand beaches in Crete to a fortune reading in an Istanbul coffee shop, this 11-day adventure revealed why timing and local immersion make all the difference.
I've always believed that to truly recommend a destination, you need to live it yourself. When the opportunity came to explore the Greek Islands with Virgin Voyages, including stops in Istanbul and Athens, I knew this was the kind of adventure that would inspire not just me, but every client I work with.
This was an 11-day itinerary that hit four of the most famous Greek Islands: Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos, and Crete. Flying in and out of Athens gave me the chance to bookend the cruise with time in one of the world's most historically rich cities. I purposely booked this trip for May 2026, knowing that later in the summer these destinations and ports get absolutely packed. The timing trick? Go in May or September to avoid the large crowds and the oppressive heat. Trust me, if you go midsummer, there are way too many people and it is very hot in this area.
The Pink Beach That Stopped Me in My Tracks

The moment I keep telling people about happened in Crete. There's a beach there called Elafonisi Beach, and it's considered one of the most famous beaches in the world. What makes it unique is the pink sand. I'd seen photos, of course, but standing there with my feet in that soft, rosy sand, watching the water shift from turquoise to deeper blue, was something entirely different. It's the kind of place that makes you understand why people fall in love with the Greek Islands.
Istanbul: A Day That Changed Everything
What surprised me most on this trip was Istanbul. We were only there for one day, but I packed in a tour of the spice markets, learned about traditional carpet making, and ate more Turkish Delights than I care to admit. But here's the moment that stays with me: I ducked into a coffee shop and ordered a Turkish coffee. When I finished, my tour guide read my fortune from the leftover residue at the bottom of the cup. It felt intimate and spontaneous, the kind of cultural experience you can't plan for but that defines a trip.

Then there was the Turkish bath. I never thought something like that would be so amazing. It was relaxing in a way that went beyond physical, almost like shedding the stress of everyday life layer by layer. That single day in Istanbul became an unexpected bonus that elevated the entire journey.
Who This Trip Is Perfect For
Virgin Voyages is an adult-only cruise, which makes it ideal for a wide range of travelers. I met people in their 20s all the way up to guests in their 90s, and everyone seemed to be having an incredible time. The vibe is sophisticated but never stuffy. This is also an amazing destination for honeymooners. Visiting all of the Greek Islands with someone you love? It doesn't get more romantic than that.

I would always recommend this as a first-time cruise for people who have never cruised before. It hits so many hot spots, and the food on Virgin Voyages is absolutely amazing. Seriously, the culinary experience alone is worth the trip.
What I'll Tell My Clients Now
Having experienced this myself, I will recommend my clients arrive in Athens at least three or four days before boarding the cruise. Athens is such a big, beautiful, historical city, and it deserves more than a quick layover. The famous Acropolis, the incredible Greek food, the wine, it all adds another dimension to the adventure. If they can't do a pre-stay, I'll encourage a post-stay instead. There are so many beautiful sights to see, and rushing through would be a missed opportunity.

This trip reminded me why I do what I do. I want to inspire my clients with my travel, to go on an adventure and live their lives. The Greek Islands delivered that in ways I'm still processing. And now, armed with all this firsthand knowledge, I can help travelers pick a destination that matches their lifestyle. Next up for me? Chile, Brazil, and Argentina. The adventure never stops.
