I'd heard whispers about the Sandos properties in the Cancun area, but I needed to experience them myself. Three Resorts, One Thread of Excellence
The trip took me through three distinct Sandos properties, each with its own personality. Sandos Playacar immediately felt connected to something larger, immersed in its own gated community where you could wander, shop for coffee, and cycle all over. This is the kind of place where you absolutely need comfortable shoes because you will get your steps in. Flip flops might leave you with blisters after exploring those winding paths.
Sandos Caracol was built right in the rainforest jungle, and I have to tell you, it was incredible. Monkeys swung through the trees, peacocks strutted past, and those little Mexican raccoons (coatis, I think they're called) would pop up around corners. Long horn bulls grazed nearby, surrounded by the most incredible foliage. The property winds through jungle paths that open unexpectedly to a theatre stage, restaurants, mini golf, then ultimately the pools and oceanfront. Walking those trails, caves and suspension bridge felt like an adventure rather than just a resort stay. Included here are ruins, cycling and yes, the sound bath too!
Our final stay at Sandos Cancun offered a completely different experience: a beachfront tower-style resort with three tiers of infinity pools cascading toward the ocean. We enjoyed VIP restaurant access in a specialty oceanfront restaurant exclusive to Air Canada Vacations travelers. What truly caught me off guard was learning that all three resorts are built on a platform of sustainability. They're committed to no harm to the wildlife that calls these properties home. I loved seeing their approach to reusable plastic cups and water jugs in the rooms instead of disposable bottles. For a brand I wasn't previously familiar with, the quality and environmental thoughtfulness exceeded my expectations at every turn.
There's a misconception that Mexico might be challenging or unsafe for Canadian travelers, but honestly, it offered me unexpected surprises of traveler's delight around every corner. The service teams demonstrated exceptional care, the beach fronts are stunning, and everything feels selected for the best possible experience. I felt safe always.
Who This Is Perfect For
These resorts are ideal for families who want affordable travel that brings wildlife encounters and beautiful beaches together. The multi-generational experience works beautifully here, especially at Playacar and Caracol where there's room to roam, wander, explore, swim, and laugh together. I now understand why travelers who want to feel connected to nature while still enjoying resort comforts and amenities, would absolutely love this.
However, I'll be honest: if you're seeking butler service, room service delivered to your door, or golf carts to whisk you around, this isn't the right fit. There's no pretense here, just genuine hospitality and natural beauty. Pack your bug spray, slather on that sunscreen, and embrace the adventure. These properties reminded me that resort style and hotel style can be equally outstanding when there's a common thread of excellence weaving them together.
