Anita Magnoli's Two Unforgettable Stays in Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Anita Magnoli's Two Unforgettable Stays in Ocho Rios, Jamaica

From climbing Dunn's River Falls to discovering the perfect morning ritual at The Boulangerie, I returned to Moon Palace Jamaica Grand twice for good reason.

Some resorts stay with you long after you leave. Moon Palace Jamaica Grand in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, is one of those places for me. I first visited in 2017 on an educational group trip, and when I had the opportunity to return in 2019, I knew I had to experience it again. That second visit only confirmed what I already suspected: this resort offers something truly remarkable.

As a travel advisor, I believe in experiencing destinations firsthand. It's one thing to read about a resort's amenities or study a fact sheet. It's another thing entirely to walk the grounds in the evening, to taste the food, to feel the warm Jamaican hospitality wrap around you from the moment you arrive. I wanted to understand this corner of the Caribbean at a deeper level, and Moon Palace Jamaica Grand gave me exactly that opportunity.

The Perfect Balance of Adventure and Relaxation

What struck me most about the resort was its peaceful atmosphere combined with upscale amenities and exceptional service. With approximately 700 guestrooms and suites, beautiful ocean views, inviting pools, and a stunning beachfront setting, it offered everything I could want while still feeling connected to the beauty and spirit of Jamaica. One thing that surprised me was how safe it felt. I would frequently go to the gym in the evenings and walk around the resort on my own without any concerns. The staff were genuinely helpful and always greeted guests with warm smiles and helpful attitudes.

And then there was the food. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of dining options and the opportunity to experience delicious Jamaican flavours alongside international cuisine. The quality really stood out to me, and there was always something tempting to discover. But my favourite spot quickly became The Boulangerie. Whether I was stopping in first thing in the morning for a specialty coffee, popping by in the afternoon for a sweet treat or a salad, or enjoying one of their tempting desserts in the evening, it became part of my daily ritual. The array of pastries, cakes, handmade chocolates and treats was hard to resist. Those seemingly small moments became some of the most memorable parts of my vacation.

Exploring Beyond the Resort

One of the highlights of staying in Ocho Rios was experiencing some of Jamaica's most iconic attractions. I visited Dunn's River Falls, one of Jamaica's most famous natural wonders. Climbing the cascading falls surrounded by lush tropical scenery was an unforgettable experience, and one I would absolutely recommend to adventurous travellers. I also had a fantastic, interactive experience at The Dolphin Cove, which was located right at the resort. Getting up close and personal with the dolphins was such a fun and memorable part of my Jamaican adventures.

This is what makes Ocho Rios such a wonderful destination. You can spend the day exploring waterfalls, enjoying unique excursions, and experiencing the local culture, then return to the comfort of your resort to enjoy a delicious dinner, unwind by the ocean, and simply relax. During my first visit, I stayed a full seven nights, and during the second, just a few nights. Both stays confirmed the outstanding quality of the food, the service, and the rooms. I would say it's a very luxurious resort, though there isn't a whole lot of entertainment at night. But for anyone who wants to kick back and truly relax, it's a grand choice.

Who Would Love This Experience

I think couples celebrating a honeymoon or milestone celebration would truly appreciate this resort. A girlfriend getaway would be wonderful here as well. It offers a great balance of being in a very luxurious environment with exceptional amenities, great food, and attentive service, all with The Dolphin Cove right on site and within easy access to attractions like Dunn's River Falls and Mystic Mountain.

My tip for anyone visiting? Don't plan every minute of your stay. A common mistake is filling the itinerary with excursions because there is so much to see and do. Choose one or two must-do experiences and leave the rest of your time open. Spend a morning slowly enjoying your coffee and pastry at The Boulangerie, find a quiet spot by the ocean, indulge in a leisurely lunch, and let the afternoon unfold. The Jamaican hospitality is remarkable, and the food is truly some of the best in the world. Having lived these experiences myself, from the excitement of Dunn's River Falls to quiet moments overlooking the Caribbean, I can help my clients enjoy the moment and make the most of their time in this beautiful corner of Jamaica.

FAQ's

Based on two separate stays in 2017 and 2019, travel advisor Anita Magnoli found the resort consistently impressive for its upscale amenities, exceptional service, and stunning beachfront setting. The quality of food and the warmth of the staff stood out on both visits. She describes it as a grand choice for anyone who wants a luxurious, relaxing Caribbean experience.

The resort offers a wide variety of dining options covering Jamaican flavours and international cuisine. A particular highlight is The Boulangerie, a café and bakery popular for specialty coffees, pastries, cakes, handmade chocolates, salads, and desserts. It became a daily ritual for the advisor across both stays and is highly recommended for a slow, enjoyable morning.

Anita Magnoli reports feeling consistently safe throughout both of her stays, including walking around the resort grounds alone in the evenings and using the gym at night. Staff were described as genuinely helpful and welcoming at all times. Guests seeking a secure, comfortable environment should find the resort reassuring on this front.

Dunn's River Falls, one of Jamaica's most iconic natural attractions, is a highly recommended day trip involving a climb up cascading waterfalls through lush tropical scenery. Dolphin Cove is located directly at the resort and offers interactive experiences with dolphins. Mystic Mountain is also cited as an attraction within easy reach of Moon Palace Jamaica Grand.

The resort is recommended as an excellent fit for honeymooners, couples celebrating milestone occasions, and groups of friends on a girlfriend getaway. Its combination of luxury amenities, attentive service, great food, and proximity to top Ocho Rios attractions makes it a strong match for travellers who want both relaxation and easy access to adventure.

Anita Magnoli stayed seven nights on her first visit and a shorter stay on her second, finding both lengths rewarding. She advises against over-scheduling excursions and recommends choosing one or two key experiences such as Dunn's River Falls, then leaving ample time to relax, enjoy the resort's dining, and soak up the Jamaican atmosphere at a leisurely pace.

The advisor notes that evening entertainment is relatively limited at the resort, and prospective guests should bear this in mind when planning their trip. However, for travellers whose priority is genuine relaxation, excellent food, and a peaceful atmosphere rather than a busy nightlife scene, this is unlikely to be a drawback.
